We ended up with about 10 inches to 1 foot of snow so there will be plenty of work Tomorrow.  I've been moving snow all day getting our road open and widened with blower on tractor.  Paul

Concentrate on GPS

Mark - if I were you I'd concentrate on the GPS recording.  If there is a lot of new snow, why risk getting stuck with an implement out there by yourself.  Dave's crew should have Crooked John  and Wulf's Cutoff done, so we won't have too much bushwacking.  Also note that the forecast has changed: 6F tonight and only 22F tomorrow.

GPS tracking

John, Ray, Gus and Paul,

Great suggestion. I'll try to get there earlier and start out long before You are there. I'm wondering that if there is a lot of snow like there was at discovery today if I should tow a roller or open it up with just the Alpine II. any thoughts from you guys?

Professional grooming ojt

Mark - I suggest you take a machine carrying the GPS receiver and do all the trails, stopping at each junction to mark a waypoint.  The Spire Loop will have to be done on skis. Why not take the 2-stroke Skandic, since it's easy to maneuver. The rest of us can come behind and do the grooming, hopefully gaining some more experience so that our work approaches professional standards.  You have obviously been getting lots of experience so we don't need to worry about the quality of your work.

I would like to suggest that we start at 9:00, since the overnight temp is predicted to be 15F and the high tomorrow 24F.  That would also give Mark an opportunity to get ahead of us.

Hut area organization

Groomers,

Yesterday I went to Mt Haggin and spent much of my time working in around the hut area attempting to our equipment that we use on a regular basis easier access. The other priority as the board is talking about increasing funds to improve both Mt Haggin and Moulton was have our work area less cluttered and look more professional. My thought was if we are attempting to raise more funding we need to look like we deserve it. We keep getting wonderful compliments on our grooming and I see this as just another step in generating more members and collecting more donations.

Last night Jesse gave me his GPS equipment to remap the trails and include the new trails so give some thought on how you would like me to run the trails tomorrow during our grooming session.

Track repair

Late yesterday Ray told me that someone had been on the trails with snowmobiles. Sara and I skied Vanna's, Sap Sucker and little Cal witnessing the damage today. Gus was at the waxing clinic and told me the search and rescue were in there looking for someone. So late this afternoon I went up and reset track on Little Cal, leveled Sapsucker and cleaned up Sleepy hollow and the skate lane on Crooked John. There was a lot of traffic today so again the descents were shaved off and there were numerous sitzmarks.

Grooming report 1-24-14

Thursday's night crew groomed Crooked John so this morning new tracks were set on Crooked John and groomed Sleepy Hollow. The new beginner entrance to the building was opened up. After it sets up it needs to be widened and tracks set.

I called Gus and we will meet at 10am.  After getting the machine put away I'll haul the grader to my place using the club trailer. Mark and I will then figure out what's needed to repair the grader.  Paul

Meeting time?

Does anyone have a suggested time for meeting at Haggin to unload the Yamaha? Paul and I didn't get the trailer lights to work with Paul's truck, so all is still at my house.

Sorry for not updating blog

Sorry for not updating the blog about what I did Wednesday. I posted it on the Missoula Nordic site and thought I would talk to you and Paul yesterday in Wise River. We had too many topics to contend with and I'll blame it on age, it slipped my mind. In the future, I'll try to be more mindful of getting it on the blog when I get home.

Grooming 1-24

I agree that grooming should wait for new snow. I'm planning to do some clipping on Vanna's Way tomorrow and possibly Saturday.    Ray

You have better intel

From what you and Sara have observed first-hand, I'd say we should let things go and wait for new snow or more serious deterioration.  Let me know when I can link up with you guys and bring the trailer here for storage.

I know Dave Susanj is getting these updates, so hopefully they will avoid the set tracks if they go up tonight.

grooming schedule for tommow

When Gus and I skied on Wednesday the tracks were holding up real well. The descents out of Deaths dip and sleepy hollow were getting a bit ugly so before leaving Wednesday, I scarified from Deaths dip down sleepy hollow and the skate lane on Crooked John. Sara skied little Cal yesterday and reported that both the tracks and the descents were still in good shape. I wasn't there today as I went to Discovery so I don't know what the traffic was like today. Paul and I talked about dropping off the repaired machine and taking the grader to his house for repair. If you feel we should groom, What time should we meet?

24 Jan 2014 Grooming Schedule

Paul is picking up the VK10 from Staack's today (Thurs) and he will bring it to Haggin in the morning. He already checked it out yesterday, because of plug mis-match, couldn't hook up to the Club trailer electrically.

Apparently Haggin didn't catch much snow, so we're probably forced to scarify the old pack and soften up the skate lanes and reset the tracks. After a long weekend of use and a whole week of warm days, things have to be glazed, hard, beat up, and dirty. We've got three aggressive groomers plus other implements if  we want to really break things up. Any thoughts?

Alpine II Post 2

Went up this morning to clean up the mess we made filming yesterday and fixed the area we tracked up with both feet and the snowmobile/work sled. Cleaning up the skate area went well but didn't set the best track where we had ether wrecked it yesterday or wrecked it with the groomer today. Finished up getting the rest of the ice out of the tracks on the Alpine II and cleaned the snow off the carpet. Great job Ray as it didn't take that much more effort.

Alpine II

I tried to use the Alpine today. It was and still is immobile. It was full of snow and ice in the tracks. I froze fingers and gave up trying to free the tracks. Moved one hell of a lot of ice/snow. Ray

Off to Seeley.  VK10 is still waiting for parts. Will pick it up next week if it is ready.  Have fun skiing.  paul

Sounds good!  We're going up tomorrow also - maybe we'll see y'all.

Grooming 1-17-14

I agree with Mark about not messing with the tracks - they should be good. I will take the gas tomorrow morning. I am heading to Missoula Satrday.    Ray

Mt Haggin tracks

I would bet the tracks are in great shape as on Tuesday when we set them the moisture was quite high and when we skied after grooming, they were well set up. I didn't ski today as we needed to go to Missoula but will ski tomorrow. If they are blown out which I don't think they will be I can do a quick clean up at the end of my ski or see if Saturday morning would work if we want to do a full workup.

Mark

What are conditions at Mt. Haggin

Does anybody know what kind of shape the trails are in?  Do we need to reset the tracks?

Thurs. night

Thursday night crew won't be grooming this week - no new snow & I believe some grooming was done on Tuesday

Grooming for Tuesday

I'm up for 8 AM. Was up today after John and I had a conversation on Sunday about getting stuck Friday and the need for more markers at the meadow crossings. I've marked most of the crossings better and shoveled snow in some of the areas where our cant is off. Hopefully we can get our projects done without getting stuck tomorrow.

Catching up after the big blow

Tuesday looks good for catch-up.  Temps are going to be warm though, so an early start would be advised.  Any takers for 8:00?  Please just respond by doing a new post, rather than commenting.  Since Ray is using email, he is defaulted to posting. Posting really works best anyway, since the latest info is always on top.

Mark just called. He and Sara are out of town and won't be back in time for grooming so the rest of us are good to go.  See ya all at 9:00.

John
If Mark will take a bye then I guess it's Gus, Ray, Paul, and John

9 sounds good to me. Ray

Grooming Schedule 10 Jan 2014

Paul reports 4" of new snow at his place overnight, so Mt. Haggin probably got at least that much.  There also were a couple of inches since grooming on Sunday. Mark may have an update on snow conditions.

VK10 #1 is still a Staack's, waiting for parts. The mechanic claims the idle problems we've been having are because the clutch was trying to engage at idle (which he says was set too high). He adjusted the idle speed. The belt was getting worn. Therefore a new belt and some clutch parts have been ordered.  Paul will start and warm up the machine when we pick it up to verify the idle problem is fixed.

Learn to Ski

The learn to ski group were up today with 4 classic and one skate students. It looked like the classes went well. The entrance, Commons  Wulfs Cutoff and upper Crooked John were groomed. All of the terrain was used for the classes except upper Crooked John. All instructors skied at least one loop and were pleased with what we are doing. I think they are ready to give us a better look with better signage, maps and a new statement asking for donations. It was snowing pretty hard today but don't know if or when our next grooming should take place. Should go up tomorrow to ski and can give an update on snow depth.

3 Jan 2014 Grooming Schedule

Mark and I groomed yesterday and although there were quite a few skiers, the trails should be in pretty good shape. Mt. Haggin isn't forecast to get much snow in the next few days.  We emptied the last of the gas cans, leaving VK10 #2 and the 4-stroke Skandic full.  I don't know the status of the other Skandic.  I called Dave Susanj and his crew won't come up tonight.

I hope we can get VK10 #1 to Staack's.
